Chapter 4 - Serving is Different from Helping and Fixing
"Serving is Different from Helping and Fixing"
- I have never thought about helping being based on inequality because generally, the focus is on the act of bettering a situation.
- The articles start stating how helping is taking away from someone in terms of self-esteem and sense of self-worth, but I have to disagree with it because, although you are putting your pride aside to ask for help it is not be viewed as a bad thing. This goes both ways because you could treat a server in the worst way possible and still be able to lower the self-esteem of a person and sense of worth.
- Religion was becoming a great thing overall in the world with two distinct items
- Indian Persian, and Jewish: Focused on the unseen realm - Relationship to God and other like figures.
* China - Confucianism and Daoism
- Defined and legitimated the hierarchies of class and gender that distinguished the various second-wave civilizations.
- Legalism was a philosophy that emerged are used today but to a lesser degree but in most cases.
- Confucius sought a political position but never achieved it. It is surprising that he was able to leave an imprint but that not only was it in China but it was also in Korea and Japan.
- Confucius knew that if those that were superior (father, older brother, etc,) were to treat others with genuine concern for others and other ways of respect, it means well for those that are of unequal power. This is a model that we still abide by today.
- Filial Piety
- Daoism - To withdraw from social and political activism
- Daoism favored the balance of the sexes making it the opposite of what Confucianism.
- Overall, I think the ways of thinking are good but selectively. I think that the emphasis on education is good because in order to create the change you must educate the people. However, one needs to disengage and let nature take its course as everything is not within our control.
* Cultural Traditions of Classical India
- Women were given a little more power than civilizations but it was only was women of upper castes.
- The base does not found on human existence but of the human soul. I think the soul is overall valued
